about

In 2021 we congratulated Astor Piazzolla on his 100th birthday with this program. Piazzolla succeeded like few others in combining the music of the common people - so-called folk music - with elements of art music in such a way that a characteristic personal style emerged.
At first, Piazzolla himself had a love-hate relationship with the tango. He was a kind of child prodigy on the bandoneón, and already as a teenager he played in the leading tango orchestras of Buenos Aires. Soon, however, Johann Sebastian Bach, Jazz and the European avant-garde interested him much more.
Later he broke off his studies in composition - his professor succeeded in reconciling him with the tango. Now, however, something completely new followed: he combined the character of the tango with the counterpoint of the baroque in a unique way, he staffed his formation with drumset and electric guitar, he experimented with forms such as suite, concerto and opera, thus exploding the chanson-like dance pieces of the tango. This became the birth of Tango Nuevo.
In our production, I wanted to juxtapose Piazzolla with his great role model, since a surprising affinity to Bach is evident on various levels. At the same time, Bach's music was to be given a new color - and it therefore made sense to weave the timbre of the bandoneón into Bach's music.
We are especially grateful to have found such a sensitive and passionate counterpart and mentor in Rocco Heins!
With our juxtapositions and interweavings, we wish you the best of entertainment and possibly new perspectives!
